The immediate impact media has on our community is far too great to ignore. When one of my all-time favorite sitcoms, A Different World premiered on NBC, the college enrollment rate for African-Americans tripled. Historically Black Colleges and Universities were amongst the top choice for African-American students seeking the “Hillman” experience that played out in their living rooms week after week. We had a national platform to bravely explore controversial topics all while boasting our intellect and making higher learning seamlessly achievable and cool. A generation of youth empowered to embrace their intellect, heritage and culture was the end result. Since A Different World went into syndication Black America has been denied this level of conscious entertainment. Hood Smart: The Urban STEMulus Project is committed to providing American families responsible television that fuels critical thinking by appealing to the higher consciousness. We are committed to taking on environmental and social justice issues to affect change. I strongly believe that Americans are growing increasingly tired of irresponsible television that bombards us with negative imagery and messaging about our youth, culture and urban communities. I know that Americans of all backgrounds want to see our children win! Now is the time!
Hood Smart: The Urban STEMulus Project shines a light on talented African-American students that are excelling in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math!
